Hi, I've read your posts and would like to make a couple of clarifications:

    1. One thing is to "sign on" (registering as unemployed seeking work in Spain), and something very different to apply for unemployment benefit. If you have worked in Spain and paid enough Social security contributions then you will be able to get unemployment benefit. If you have not worked, but are looking for work, you are free of course to register as unemployed with the local Job centre. I believe the same happens in the UK.

    2. The reason why some companies will ask you to "sign on" first is because if they contract someone who is registered unemployed, they get help in paying that person's Social security contributions during a period of time. This is a scheme set up by the Government to incentivize employment, and it is totally LEGAL! In fact, it ensures that your employer will give you a legal contract and pay social security contributions for you, which will entitle you to unemployment benefit if you lose your job.

Skootie's spot on with his reply and if you are asked to do that at least you know that you are getting a contract!

Just to add a point or 2

The Spanish Government want people off the dole and to be employed with contracts and rightly so but they dont make it easy or financially viable for some companies to do this. Even when companies do give you a contract they are reluctant to put 100% of your earnings on the Nomina (payslip) because of the huge amount of social security and tax they have to pay.

This results in less people wanting to pay the official tax etc which means the government has to increase the tax to compensate for this in order to balance the books...never ending circle...its about time this was broken.

If the government made the process cheaper and simpler then they would get more revenue from those that would then pay what they are supposed to and that would mean the employee would have better payments on the dole (payments relate to earnings so if you officially earn less while employed you earn less on the dole) and of course your pension will be better. This would lead to more purchases which in turn leads to more revenue from IVA on sales and possibly more work for people to attend these sales...and so on..

    Only an Idea

    Good idea and good point....

The Spanish government appears to be above (or below? ) these ideas though... taxes will increase and bureacracy will make starting a business harder and harder...

Yes, a friend of mine got caught with that some years ago. Accepted a job at 1500e a month only to find 750e was paid in cash on the 10th of the month a 750e on the 24th by cheque which was all that was being declared!

    Spanish Property 2012

My wife is an accountant here (British but working with a Spanish registered accountant, a sort of bridging the gap type service)

They are always fighting with clients to do it right
