    Default Summer job in Spain

    Hi!

My name is Kasia, I'm 22, from Poland and with my friend we're planning to spend our summer in Spain. So I've got some questions, maybe someone will help us Main point is to where is the best place for foreigners to look for the job (in bar, restaurant, hotel etc.). We speak English, Russian, and I also a little Spanish (I've been learning for only a year but it's better than nothing).
I'd like to know if there are any chances that we would find a job during summer.

If you have advices, tips, where to go, I'd be very grateful.

    cheers.

    Hi Kasia,

Welcome to the Absolute Spain Forum, I hope you enjoy it here

Regarding finding a job in Barcelona, you guessed it, most temporary jobs or part-time jobs evolve around the tourism / hospitality industry, especially for students.

During the summer many look for bar and restaurant work. If you are lucky then you will find one, if not your other option is to work as a promoter in public relations.

To get a bar job, print out 30 CVs (English and Spanish if you can) with a big photo and Spanish contact details (cellphone!!) and then go around the bars in Barcelona... Ask to speak to the manager and tell them you are looking for a job. If they are not there, then drop off your CV and ask when you can come back.

You have to know that your dream is what many others dream, so only those which put in the extra effort actually manage to land a job here in Barcelona.

As a promoter on the other hand you will quite easily find a job, but most if not all get paid on commission per person you bring to the bar or club.

I suggest stick around on the forum, upload some photos and make friends, networking is the best way to find a job here in the city.... Before you know it, you will find the people that know someone with a job offer....

    Hi Kasia,
There are plenty of jobs in courier, bar, and customer service, much of which you can arrange before you get out there. Upload your CVs in all the websites. Try this website Summer jobs in Spain summer job Spanish summer work employment

    Hi there!

I'm from Sweden and I'm also going to Spain during this summer to work (not untill July, 1st). I've been studying some spanish (parttime) and now I'd like to practice them and improve my not-so-great spanish.

I'm wondering, where is the place to go? I mean, are there cities where it's easier to find jobs? I'd like to be in a big city by the beach but I don't want to go somewhere with too much tourists. I think it'll be easier to improve my spanish if I spend most time with the locals. Please give me some advice!

I would also like to ask. Is it safe for a girl to go alone? I'm turning 20 this fall.

    Thanks in advance,

    Samantha

Good evening Samatha, welcome to Absolute Spain you could investigate Sevilla as a possible destination. Big city, plenty young people around and lots to do and see. Work is hard to find all over I think but not impossible depending on what you are thinking about. The beach is not that far away really.

    Hi Val!

Thanks for replying. I'm not looking for a fancy job. Well, I'd love to work at a clothingstore but I have no experience in that area and I would think that my spanish needs to be better for that. I guess I'll go for restaurantjobs because I worked at a restaurant last summer. Is it easier to get jobs at restaurants?

By the way, are you from Spain?

Sam, I am Scottish and have lived in Spain only 4 years. I 'retired' early so to speak. I read and see many many changes in the cafe/ restaurant businesses in the last year. Many, even up here not in such a tourist area have closed or have reduced staff/ opening hours. This type of business gets hit hard when times are tough as now and set to get even more so. Application of and adherenece of laes are also taking theor toll in places. Unemployment in Spain is at a record high and employers are taking on locals rather than 'outsiders' I hear even the famous immigrant worker areas of Huelva for strawberry workers are now employing more spanish people than they did in past years. I think but don't quote me that this type of work may be hard to get and keep even for a summer.

Hi to all the people who have written above.

Living and working in spain is a great experience, especially in the summer! Iknow because i'm english and came here two years ago. But i also know that it can be a lot of money, and ynless you are in a purely turistic place, sometimes very hard to get a job if you dont speak good spanish.

If anyone is interested, i am offering summer jobs (starting in july) here in Valencia, as au pairs. You'll have accomodation alrady sorted out, lots of free time to enjoy the summer, and there are families who require that you speak vey little, or no spanish at all.

Get in touch for more details

    Good Luck in spain!!!

Thanks Val, for all your answers!
I think I will go to Madrid, because people there speak very clear spanish, with no accent, I read on several websites. Barcelona on the other hand, seems to be a bad choice for learning spanish, though it's a great city and I love it there.

I know Madrid don't have any beaches because it's in the centre of the country, but I heard it's very very hot in summer and that the city becomes a "ghosttown" because everyone are headed to the coasts. Is this true? It does sound weird, how could a big city like Madrid EVER become a ghosttown?

    Spanish Property 2012

Hello Sam, yes many spanish people head off to the coast during August, Sevilla goes to summer hours and some businesses are closed for ALL of August. It does get very hot in the towns, the buildings gather heat all day and then radiate it back ! Sevilla has been hit to hit 53 degrees PHEW thankfully we live out of town and up the hill much cooler.

How are your plans coming along ?
