    Default Finding work in Madrid?

How do!? I am 24 years old and from Manchester in the UK. I am looking into moving to Madrid for around 12 months. I am an English native, though one of my parents is Spanish, so i have a good grasp of the language.

I am looking to move over around January time, giving me enough time to save a little money and (hopefully) find some employment before i go over. My girlfriend already lives over there, so with regards to finding accommadation i am in a good position.

Does anyone know of any websites, or has any advice that they could give me with regards to applying for jobs? I have 8 years experience in the hospitality industry and a couple of years in sales. I also ran a dance music promotion business for 18 months.

My English is fluent, but my spanish needs some work, so to start off with, i would ideally be looking for English speaking jobs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Hi sensamadona, let me see if I can give some insight...

Teaching English used to be something very popular when I was there... Not sure if this is still the case today, but given that Madrid is the capital I would suppose the need/demand is still there.

Working in the hospitality trade in Madrid would probably mean you need Spanish. Even if you'd work in an Irish pub or Hard Rock Cafe for example, I believe they would want you to be able to speak Spanish...

I also suggest you take a look at our Working in Spain section in our Guide to Spain.

    Unhappy

I spent two months in madrid this year and I would say that you could find jobs there. English speakers were common in the sol and grand via metro areas. Not sure what the areas are actually called as I live in the Costa Calida and was only in Madrid as my dd was in hospital. Not sure if I am allowed to add links but infojobs.net is a popular employment portal where you can view employment opportunities (in spanish). I am sure in such a metropolitan area as Madrid, specifically the central tourist areas, you have a good chance at finding employment. The only problem in looking for english speaking jobs is that you may be limited to low skill set positions and hence low income. If you can already speak spanish why not take the time to brush up for the next few months and go for a spanish speaking job.
    Good luck.

Hi Sensamedona I run a business in Madrid and have worked here for 13 years so have a good grasp of what's going on. There is a lot of work available teahing English but you should try and get a Tefl, Celta qualification because you will find getting work easier, you will have more options and schools won't take you on without it - you could earn up to €2,000 a month working 40hrs. InfoJobs.net - Bolsa de trabajo, ofertas de empleo or monster are good places to look. For hospitality industry, English is a real plus and there are plenty of hotels in Madrid looking for people - try same web sites for info. Suerte! Carol

+1 This post summarizes Madrid very well, I think. For those thinking of teaching Engish in Madrid, try and get some experience as well a Celta/TEFL qualification before going, as it all helps. I will add the downside to working as an English teacher in Madrid (and indeed all Spain) - hours and days of work can be unreliable. You only need a couple of cancelled classes and/or a puente to have a very poor week in terms of earning. The ability to keep a standby money reserve for "rainy days" is essential.
For those involved in the IT area, Infojobs is indeed the standard job search site, but there is a new one that is making big waves - worth checking out: Ofertas de empleo, trabajo y candidatos de nuevas tecnologías | wiseri.com

    Spanish Property 2012

By the way I was in Madrid a couple of weeks back, and things didn't seem half as bad as some are painting it. Having said that, it could be Madrid is the exception - the latest unemployment figures show a rise in all other Spain's autonomous communities, with only Madrid posting a fall. Anyway, an interesting post here on how the Irish pubs are currently prospering in Madrid by marketing their business well (I can confirm that one the places mentioned there, Triskel, was heaving the week I visited)
