If when younger I had seen the widely publicised BBC story on a single spelling mistake halving customer response I would have cancelled my holidays. More than half the Mediterranean Costas’ website content is littered with schoolboy howlers. For this reason I would have expected an avalanche of astute businesses begging me to put their content right; to perhaps add a little marketing flair.

I thought it a good opportunity too for me to directly draw the attention of several hundred businesses to this fatal marketing flaw. One week on and I haven’t received a single enquiry that has this story as its source. Now that is what I call apathy and it begs the question, are business owners up to their job? Is there a genuine desire to set out the stall and attract more business? Clearly there is not.

I know I run the risk of being accused of sour grapes; yes, a little extra work is always appreciated but on holiday with three projects currently being worked on I am far from starving. I just thought I would mention it for as I have often said; business incompetence and inertia has a far greater negative impact on the economy than does the recession. I see Volkswagen have increased sales by 20% whilst the losers are – blaming the recession. No wonder other economies (and resorts) are powering ahead. It says it all really.
