Expats relocate to Spain to GET AWAY from the life they have been leading.
Quality 1. Way of life
Quality 2. Scenery
Quality 3. Food and Drink
Quality 4. Much larger Social scene
Quality 5. Excellent hospitals
From my point of view:
Quality 1. Fantastic range of foods eg seafood, morcilla, gazpacho, fabada, tapas etc
Quality 2. An amazing range of landscapes, mountains, plains and coasts
Quality 3. Excellent public transport, whether it be metro and cercancias inside the city, or high-speed rail between the major cities. Coach travel too is far more comfortable than the Stagecoach or National Express equivalent
Quality 4. Cheaper cost of living for essentials eg public transport, renting, council tax etc. (although certain things like clothing or books can be expensive)
Quality 5. Lifestyle - no sense of menace in the town or city centre when out for a drink weekend nights. More relaxed licensing laws - if your bar is closing you'll be given time to finish your drink unlike the forced "Please drink up" in most UK pubs. Plus of course the free tapas with drinks (not everywhere in Spain)
I suppose a summary would be "Spain - where you have the space to relax, but the excitement is never far away". And of course this all ignores some negative points, but which country doesn't have those?
For me
1. The light
2. The fresh food available
3. The diversity of the landscape
4. The friendly people
5. The flora and fauna
What the ex pats see hmmmm depends on the ex pat, some appear to keep the holiday glasses on others see the country for many of the things on the lists already on the thread and others just want out of UK.
In the past it seems Spain attracted them for the a mix of the holiday life style, the more for your money, which still applies in housing. The freedom for children ( no comment from me on that) the attitude to life in general.
