I am moving soon to Spain and have a little something saved. I'm wondering, I know the housing market has slowed, many talk about a crash, some even think the worst is yet to come. But..... I have been checking rent prices and they are so high, I'm wondering if its not better to just go all the way and buy... What do you think?

Hey there googlejunkie welcome to the forums, i recommend you register so that you can enjoy the full benefit of all our features. As for your question it is relative. The market has definitely slowed down and prices of a year or two ago are unthinkable now so something was wrong somewhere (regardless of what anyone may tell you).
In regards, to you paying a rent or a mortgage and them being practically the same I strongly suggest you look at the issue from a different perspective: renting will allow you to get a feel for Spain, a feel for an area and you can always change a year later. Buying may not leave that door open for you.

I think that renting may be your best option to start with, at least that way you can see if a town, city or village is right for you. There is no point moving somewhere to discover you hate it but know you are stuck until you can sell the house again.

Rent first - then buy! That way you can look around an area and get the feel of it first. Areas differ greatly and it depends on whether you want the hustle and bustle of life on the coast or the slower, more relaxed lifestyle inland, up in a valley like us.
....and don't buy 'off-plan'. There are plenty of completed and 2nd hand properties already on the market, which you can view just like you would at home and take your time deciding if you like them. We viewed nearly 30 villas and drew up a short list before finally deciding. Many vendors are desperate to sell and so drive a hard bargain. Get yourself an independant agent AND lawyer - I can recommend Search and Survey in Calpe - and make sure all the relevant searches have been done. There are some dodgy properties out there - give them a wide berth and go for something 100% legal. Good luck and enjoy a new life in Spain! |

At last!
A solution if you would like to live you dreams in Spain but property markets are a nightmare! Buy over 4 years with only 2 months rent in advance. No payment of Estate Agent fees. The purchase price is FIXED at the outset, so time is on your side to build equity. No lengthy process, moveŽin within days not weeks or months. Solicitor involvement just like a normal sale to protect your interest. No lock in! if you decide not to buy then no problem. You can serve notice and move out. On completion, subject to paying the monthly rents on time you will receive for up to 50% of the rent rebate to be deducted from the purchase price. You can start feeling an immediate sense of pride of ownership so will take care of the property, make improvements so add value to the community. Also a feel good factor as part of the rent is working for you. Rent housing or rent your own - The choice is yours If you register I can send you a Private message! |
