ask ten people and they will tell you that what you read in the papers is fact, but ask another ten and they will say that it's a load of tripe.

Houses getting demolished...does it happen here? yes it does...but it also happens in the UK...one guy built a house and hid it behind bales of straw for 4 years so he could get around planning laws, but the courts took a different view and demolition was ordered. Anothe man thought bhe could get away with building a house inside a barn the take the barn down...based on the 4years idea that it would be legal.....it wasn't and the court issued a demolition order.

Unemployment? yes there is unemployment, but if you are wanting to live here you either make sure that you have job to come to or you have enough money to be able to live here.

People rushing back to UK? Since I've been here,I've only heard of two that have gone back. One went back for medical care, and the other went back because they missed their family.

    Me? I'm staying.

Thanks for all the replies, much food for thought. funnily enough there is an article on the daily mail site today stating that large numbers of over-55s are emigrating lately. The media here are a funny bunch - one week they are reporting that everyone is coming back to the UK , the next people are leaving en masse...

Britain's grey exodus of over-55s so fed up with crime and weather they want to move abroad 06th March 2010

Record numbers of the over-55s want to move abroad because they are fed up with Britain's soaring crime rates, its creaking economy and the rotten weather.
Research by the Foreign Office has revealed that just over four in ten of those approaching retirement are considering moving abroad.
Freezing temperatures, coupled with the woeful economic situation which has seen interest rates on savings plummet and the cost of living soar, is behind the potential exodus, experts believe.

Others are simply fed up with crime rates and are keen to flee the violence and antisocial behaviour which plague our streets.
To many of the post-war generation, Britain has lost its national identity and is unrecognisable from the country they grew up in, when fear of crime or being attacked in the home was so low that people would leave their back doors unlocked.
Those who emigrate are allowed to claim their UK pension abroad and often get more for their money than they would at home.

They also qualify for free healthcare, so long as the country they move to is part of the European Union.
Spain and France are the favourite destinations for older Britons, although with the poor value of the pound against the euro, non-EU countries such as northern Cyprus have also recently become popular.

Cheaper alternative: Northern Cyprus is becoming a popular destination for older Britons
In the decade following Labour's rise to power, more than 1.5million British citizens moved abroad, with around 200,000 leaving each year.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office figures reveal that 42 per cent of those aged over 55 are currently considering relocating overseas.
Around 38 per cent hope to do so within the next five years, they said.
While the promise of better weather - after one of the worst winters in decades - was the main reason people gave for wanting to move overseas, many failed to consider the practicalities of emigrating, the survey said.
Although most who retire to foreign countries still have their pension paid in sterling, a quarter of those questioned admitted they had not thought about how fluctuations in the value of the pound could affect them when living abroad.
Four in ten also said they thought exchange rates were less important once you lived in a foreign country.
The poll, carried out in January, found that most people researched where to emigrate to simply by visiting a country on holiday.
But the FCO warned that such an approach was risky because holidays rarely provided an insight into the rules and regulations of a country.
Foreign Office minister Chris Bryant said: 'In the excitement of making plans for a future in the sun, people don't always think about the possible downsides or the problems that can occur.
'It's always worthwhile being extra cautious when you are making a purchase abroad. Local laws can be complex and unclear, so always seek legal advice.'
Official figures show that a third of those emigrating went to Australia or New Zealand. More than a quarter went to Spain or France, and one in 12 to the U.S.

I can understand people who emigrate to Australia and New Zealand. I have travelled to both countries and for years tried to emigrate, but the so & so's, wouldn't let me in.
