    Default NIE card??

Could anyone please advise if these NIE cards are a must if you plan on living in Spain?? If they are who actually gets them everyone in the family or just the adults??

Where would you get them from and is there a cost??

    Thanks Zoe :-)

The card is being replaced by a piece of paper in some areas of the conutry at least. I have one for the first time and it is A4 paper. I am not sure they are a must but they are very helpful to have as some things you cannot do without one.

You certainly will need an NIE if you plan to live in Spain. Without one it would be very difficult to arrange bank accounts, electricity supply, medical care, and just about everything else.
You can apply to the nearest Spanish embassy or consulate. Alternatively you can wait until you arrive and then apply. As far as I remember there is no fee(if there is, it's minimal)

Hi Zoe, if you you are an EU citizen, you will each get an A4 piece of paper, which is neither use not ornament, however the number on it, will be your lifeline here as far as officialdom goes. If you are coming from outside the EU you will receive a creditcard size ID card with said number on it, which is far more User friendly.

Seldom is anything that easy here ! Entirely different system. For buying outright a car needed NIE. I suspect that whether you pay all or part the NIE is still needed. You have to pay taxes if you want to be legal.

My NIE is on the A4 size, but there isn't an expiry date. The old credit card type was a boon. The boss uses her Spanish driving licence in lieu of the card and it is always accepted, the NIE being printed thereon
