    Default Health Care in Spain

Hi, I moved to Spain a few months ago and although we have NIE numbers we have not become residents yet. I am about to run out of the supply of prescribed drugs that my UK GP gave me. How to do I go about getting repeat prescription? Any help much appreciated.

    Hello & welcome.
Do you have a permenant place to live now ?
If so, go to the town hall & register on the Hacienda (quite easy if you have a dictionary) They will give you a form stating where you live, take this to the Medical Centre where they will register you & give you an appoinment for the doctor.

If you are renting ? then you can be classed as a visitor/tourist as you will have a UK address to give them ?. In that case just visit the Medical Centre & ask to see the doctor.

I take it that you have an EEC Medical Card (they will ask for it) If you are a pensioner it will be free for your drugs.
Just show the doctor your normal medication & he/she will give you a prescription for the same (drug name on the box may vary)

Have you words ready on a piece of paper.....
    Appointment.
    Tablets.
Amount of time you need medication for.
Are you feeling well ? or not so well etc.
Address you are staying (on your NIE)

    HTH

Residents or not, you will need to obtain a SIP card and register with a GP.

Assuming you are under 65 and were working before you left the UK, you will qualify for free treatment under the Spanish health service on the basis of your UK NI contns. for the next 1-2 years. Contact the Pension Service at Newcastle (The Pension Serviceor email tvp.internationalqueries@thepensionservice.gov.uk to obtain form E106, which you then take to your doctor's surgery.

This may take a while and in the short term, you may be better off saying you are here on an extended holiday and showing them your E111.
