There IS a funny side to politics
Who said politics can’t be fun? During the recent EU elections the police in Barcelona had to go to the homes of several polling station officials who had overslept. In Huelva a voting table’s ‘secretary for the day’ confessed that he couldn’t read or write and complained that his substitute didn’t want to take his place.
In Vallodolid a priest supervising a voting table was excused when he explained he had to take mass. In Balalcázar, Córdoba a drunk was placed under arrest for hitting the Civil Guard officer inside the polling station.
Sinful electoral corruption! In Pamplona a man, who is virtually blind, complained that his helper was trying to get him to switch his voting preferences. There was near calamity in Badalona near Barcelona when a sneak thief grabbed a postman’s bag from his moped. It contained half a dozen or so postal votes. The Junta Electoral had a tough decision to make when considering a dead man’s postal vote. He had been alive when he posted it. They decided it could be counted.
Few things epitomise the changing face of Spain than the 74-year old pensioner who was ‘excited to help’ as she took control of one of the new electronic voting systems.
