The fig tree at the back of our place (ownership unknown) apparently produces uneatable figs, according to the previous owner of our house. The birds seem to eat them, though. As for strawberries one of my tubs (on the patio) is producing a few, but the plants in the other tub have all died off - don't know if a weevil has got in there and is systematically chomping on the roots.

Default Spanish Drivers

One of the problems around here are the "speed" kings on their fork lift trucks (yes, they go a couple of miles or more on a delivery) and those silly pedal cars made by AIXAM (looks like Maxia in the mirror - maxia inconveniencia). After driving a mile or two stuck behind one of those and most of the drivers around here are ready to take any chances to get past.

Yes i agree with a lot of the comments made about spanish drivers, it is a latin thing as italians are just the same, i find the Germans the best drivers in europe very exacting& precise in all their manouvers even at speed on the autobahns. As for the M25 being a rolling road block as a very frequent user it is just simply too busy at present they are adding a 4th lane all the way round in time for the 2012 olympics & it still wont be big enough.

"at present they are adding a 4th lane all the way round in time for the 2012 olympics"

Having been a user living north of the Thames it has always been most infuriating that the bottlenecks caused by too few lanes have been on the north side. This would not have occured if the moneyed people with lots of influence had lived on the north side. On the south side (where you know who live) they not only had plenty of lanes but they then went and added another (4th) lane in places while the north side still had a couple of short stretches with only two.

What it must be like to have the ear of those in power!

I am now glad to be living in an area of relatively quiet roads (yes, even the main ones) and I'm quite happy to put up with the slowcoaches, well, moderately happy.

you may think it's bad here, but I lived in HongKong for 13 years and found out that roundabouts are not included in driver training or driving tests. Public transport drivers threatened to go on strike when the penaltyfor running a red light was upped from 3 points to five. A law stating the headlights must be used at night was only introduced three years ago. Add to thisthere is A) a Hell of alot of cars in a small territory, B) very young driver tear around the place in high powered cars. C) it is thought to be acceptable to turn across three lanes to get to the toll booth with the shortest que.

give me spanish drivers anytime

Spanish drivers think roundabouts are for parking on!

Here, on the death trap that is the N-332 when they overtake and are heading straight into the oncoming traffic, it's the person facing the head on collision (ie the one not overtaking like a maniac) who is expected to move over onto the hard shoulder/cycle lane/aixam lane to avoid an accident. I don't how many times I've seen this and have had to swerve to avoid collision a couple of times myself.

And that's before we move onto the topic of overtaking and pulling into the teeny tiny space between you and the car in front, causing you to brake - but not too hard lest the car behind which is driving in your boot hits you.... aaarrghhh!!!

Fortunately, around here they are not too bad and the roads are relatively quiet. Have just come off the N432a from Alcala la Real (10km) and only met one car and that was on the wrong side of the road - parked and the driver was watering the verge!
