Default mobile phone company - advices

I have been living in Spain since 2001 and have worked for in mobile telephony for years and have acquired lots of knowledge which I would like to inform about. Movistar, Vodafone and Orange are the big main operators in Spain and they have 97% of the market. The rest 3% are split between 3 or 4 other new companies. These new companies will most probably have great success in the upcoming years as prices traditionally in Spain are very high (believe it or not in a country where people does not earn much). The EU sent out a report this week (March-2009) informing that average mobile bill in Spain reaches 35 euro, while in EU the average is 19 euro.
It is worthwhile look into the new players and their offer as they easily offer a better product than Movistar, VOD and Orange.
MASmovil is the best operator in terms of tariffs and service. They offer 50% savings for call inside Spain, text messages and also calling home to UK, Norway or wherever. AND their customer service speaks English, Scandinavian, German and Spanish.
I use them and Im very happy with them (also my friends would say the same.)
This post will hopefully inform you all and avoid future problematic conversations with the "old and expensive" operators who does not really care about customer service.

Hello, my movistar pay as you go does me fine, cheap texts between me and my husband, some to Uk and thats about all it is used for bar the odd call 20 euro topup can last 3 months and more. I have had no problem with movistar, we use the online topup we are low users of all our mobiles.

    hello VaiL
its good to hear that you are satisfied. I can assure you with the mentioned company MAS you will save half of your spending, but if you dont really spend much (maybe 10 euro), then who cares to save (5 euro). But Iīve got your point, and you have got mine ;-)

Phone companies don't like us we are such low users of mobiles and home phone, they can never get us to take out schemes, they are all more expensive that our total actual call/text costs.

let me just ad some details which are useful. The big phone companies have good tariffs but only when you enter in a minimun monthly fee deal and stays in service for long time (so I agree with you). However now there is a new company MASmovil who is from Scandinavia offering the best tariff in the market and without a contract to sign or any obligations. Finally Spain has got what Scandinavia has had for 10 years; a low-cost operator. Tariff is 8 ct for all calls and text, and call to UK is 7 ct (fixed) and 16ct (mobile UK). This is very cheap. You can also keep your current number (portability). Also they offer USB modems for 3.5 speed surfing without contracts. pay 80 euro for the modem and surf pay-as -you - go for 3ct/Mb.
well, anyways, my point is that you have a perfect substitution for your movistar. good luck.

Masmovil also have free calls between people on same network. Both companies are good, I guess.

Hey trodinge, sounds like you are the ambassador of Masmovil... Not very realistic advice if that's the case and you are not disclosing that fact!

If that is the case, beware! On this forum we have no censorship, so if someone comes along and decides to tell us how BAD masmovil is, then it will be on here too

Trodinge - I live in Teneife, how can I look at Masmovils offers, order a phone, check their coverage etc?
Or would I be better sticking to one of the main operators?
I am on Vodafone PAYG at the moment and spend maybe 20€ per month.
Icould do with a new phone though and really want something with WIFI so i can connect in my apartment and bars with WIFI.
I need WIFI for VOIP numbers - so it is pretty important.
Any idea on type of phone and network?
