Default EU citizen registering for foreign residency

I understand that as an EU citizen you no longer have to apply for an NIE number, but just register for foreign residency. Does anybody know how you go about doing this? Thanks very much

Hi vavski, welcome to the Absolute Spain Forum.
Why not take a moment and introduce yourself in our Introductions Forum.
As for the NIE question:

Yes according to new regulations, which appear to be changing a lot lately, you still NEED a NIE number, but you DONT HAVE TO APPLY FOR IT SEPARATELY. You will be given one when you register as a foreign resident. You can find more details on our regional websites: Residence.

Hope that helps...

Hi Vavski,

Yes, as a member of the EU you need to get your NIE as a tax identification number to be used in Spain. Prior to purchasing a property, selling a property, obtaining a mortgage, starting up a business or working in Spain, it is a requirement by law that every individual possess an NIE Number.

Let me know if you need some legal assistance.

I'm a spanish lawyer based in the uk. Please have a look my web site "Spanish property law uk" and send me an private message if you need my help.

Kind regards,

Default Do you need an NIE number?

Hi Vavski,

No, as an EU citizen you do need an NIE number as a national and tax identification number to be used in Spain. It is normally required to have one in order to open a bank account, purchase a property and register with the tax authorities, etc.

If you want I can process it for you. Normally it will take 2 weeks and yes you will have to pay some fees to the notary who does the registration.

Please send me a PM and I will expleain to you in detail what the requiriments are.

Kind Regards,

You can obtain a NIE number for yourself fairly easily. The requirements vary from place to place usually at the whim of the clerk you end up in front of but what you will need is a completed one of these:

If you do it yourself there is no fee to pay to anyone and certainly not a notary.
