Hmm building site H&S, like taking off sandles and putting trainers on to go on site or walking wheel barrows over a 10 metre drop on a plank held in place by "rapido" which has bee set 5 minutes!![]()
With too many people chasing too few jobs, many employers have the attitude that if you don't want to work long hours for little pay, there is someone else out there who is desperate enough to take your job.
My Spanish builder supplies all the equipment, gives them training and tells them that they have got to use the PPE, etc. but as soon as his back is turned.....
Great isn't it?... keeps the hospitals in trade. It is only recently up here that scaffolding has stopped been wooden poles lashed together, and let into the side of the building, I used to cringe.
I was talking to a friend recently and his neighbour had been working two stories up on a rickety ladder, when he challenged the neighbour, the man said, "It's OK, I'm tied on", he had a washing line tied around his waste lashed to an asbestos gutter!!!!!!!![]()
I remember when I had a friend visiting, as we passed a garage a worker picked up a high jet air gun and blasted something off the car he was working on.. my friend said to do the same thing in his job he had to sign a form, put on safety gear and then register what he had done! a 2 second job turned into a major operation!! (maybe a little bit of exageration, but only a little!). Common sense seems to be missing from the H&S that it is now overly exagerated in the UK, ok here it is perhaps a little too lapse, a happy medium must be out there!?
