The real BP here Living in the Uk & Mallorca as still waitting to offload the UK house and final businesses before staying in the Paradise island for the rest of my active life ..

Having had the Villa since September 2007 have loads of knowledge of life on the island and the Spanish ways etc..

Mallorca is a great place, in what part of the island are you based?

ahh just read this 'I am 15 stone 6 2" tall no surplus blubber on me whatever' muy alto señor :-)

We lived in Cala Bona years ago [managed thye Levantee Hotel right on the front next to the harbour. Porto Cristo, lovely village near Caves of Drach etc. Then we went to Cala D'Or and managed Esmerelda Apts [no bell jokes please and I do not have a hump!!!] This was all back in the earlyn 70's.

We all know why we want out the UK.



Question put to me many times was why Mallorca ? Surely that’s just a holiday place?

So how did I end up there ?


Well Many years ago when I first did the sums and had the wakeup call and realised that it’s a big world out there and the UK just doesn’t cut it for me anymore ,so to speak ,the first choice was the good old USA , main reason was obviously the language and the Cheap housing and sunshine.

Well after being ridiculed on other expat sites with comments like “Here’s another one ,been on holiday to Disney now wants to live there !” I persevered and went into it in a great detail and found that the USA doesn’t want self funded 50 year olds from the UK . Then after watching expats in the USA moaning and whining about stuff I thought hmmmmmm hang on maybe it isn’t the bee’s knees after all .

I went through a mad phase of looking at Turkey as I was told its cheap to live Properties are cheap , figured I buy a mansion right on water’s edge ! No chance them type of properties are similar to Spain in price.
I must admit I did like the coastlines , however I saw a different side to the Turkish and believe me all the smiles and stuff is a front , all they really want is your money . This coupled with the 4 hour flying times back to the UK, and little Airline choices was a major NO NO.


Spain I always thought of as this Costa Del crime drunken brit’s place ,so it didn’t come into the equation . My experiences had also been tarnished from a long stay in Torrievieca many years ago whereby I had a video camera stolen and 2 attempted burglaries at the villa I stayed ! And that was only a 3 week stint .

Shame really as that put me off Spain somewhat , Mind you since then I have seen some lovely parts and know plenty of people who love the place , I think it’s a case of choose very, very wisely .


Then I was on holiday in Mallorca ( Majorca ) a place that I had been coming to regularly for holidays for 20 years . Never had even given much thought to Mallorca for living ,same as a lot don’t ? But it has always felt homely and draws me back year in year out .


What put me off even considering Mallorca was price of property here on the island ! A few years earlier I had stopped at an estate agent and saw basic Flats – Apartments at like some £ 300,000!

So this was stuck in the mind heck if they want 300k for a bedsit-Flat what’s a Villa ? Shock horror !


In 2006 after another depressing Labour Government further ruined the Country , And with the improvement of the Internet I searched properties all over Spain figuring well I can always get a guard dog , add Electric gates and alarms ,

I got to get out this UK its dying badly. So was scanning the pages and came across Properties for sale in Mallorca , sure in certain areas properties were like Millions but a few properties were mixed in at sensible money ! Yes sure they are dearer than Mainland Spain but I got to thinking ! What price would you pay extra to be in a place you love ? What extra is a safe area or place worth ? A place you know and love which in 20 years you have never had to go out at night looking over your shoulder ? And so on ..


Then I did some research and on Rentals some of these Villas fetch up to a £ 1,000 a week in peak summer rentals , so they will be understandably dearer than elsewhere .

But it’s all relevant if you pay 100k for a 100k home it’s still worth 100k if you pay 150k so what you still have a 150k home . etc etc ..

Then we add the pluses .

Not that I am Racist perish the thought But on the Island of Mallorca apart from the market stalls and on the beaches there all normal people . No Multi Racial mixing and Muslim Crap.

1 Hour and 55 minutes flight time back to UK . British TV . Top class Marinas ,
Warm climate all year, Not to hot in summer and mild in winter.
Spanish cost of living i.e.; cheap Fuels, Foods Fags Council property taxes etc etc.


Yes Mallorca is an island but it’s just the right size, You could climb Mountains in the morning and have supper on the Harbour seafront at night .

So a further load of visits later and here I am a stone’s throw from Porto Cristo a small quiet town with all life’s extras , shops and Burger Kings etc etc. With the Harbour thrown in Pure Paradise .

Love the people , Love the laws they have , they turn a blind eye to petty things like smoking in public, and work on the real criminals , Love the Government they don’t tax anything that’s fun , just to make money , etc etc. I just Love it to bits .

Homes don’t have all the iron mesh on the windows as the Police are on the ball they catch them stealing they give them a good kicking no mistake . And it works . reason is as was explained to me .

This island is there little Gem and a money earner if Crime gets bad the tourists won’t come so they do not Mess around . And I have seen the way they operate these guys do not namby around like the British Bobby, Some of these carry Machine Guns ..

On the land grab which hit mainland hard and still is paying the price. .In Mallorca they apparently had 1 mayor who did a dodgy deal they gave this guy the biggest sentence they could which I am understood was around 20 years ! Reason being they set an example and now all the Mayors since wont risk it. So it’s safe .

So Mallorca it was , after over a year hunting and searching for the right priced spec Villa , I found this nice 3 bed roomed villa at a sensible price and here I am .

So Mallorca my sort of Place , A proper place to live .

Live life in safety and happy, not in fear and being forced to mix with people you don’t want to !!

Mallorca – Majorca the Paradise island . Spain at its finest and as a Country should be...

You should upload some photos of your area, I've never been to Porto Cristo but love the island so would be nice to see what that area looks like...

I have videos and stuff done i dont bother with stills much , when i can add links will put a few links to youtube where they are on, alternately just search Big Pete expat Mallorca on youtube and you will find them all maybe..

I also did my own verdict on the towns i have explored giving them the "Would i live here test " and my Little Porto Cristo came tops ..

Great story Pete... I did the opposite to you. I looked all over Majorca but felt it was too cold in winter and have spent the last seven years living in the Torrevieja area. I haven't suffered any break ins or had anything stolen, and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.. I hope your post doesn't put off anyone wanting to live here. It is a multi racial community, but I can't see any problem in that.
