Default good background info about spain?

    Hello fooks,

I wonder if there any websites which get the level of detail like the old travel guides like Lonely Planet, The Rough Guide or DK PUBLISHING.

My question is, are there any websites with real good background info about every region of spain (and not only the main-attractions) with good maps and accurate info.

    Thanks in advance.

    Greetings

Hi superspainlover welcome ;-)) There is lots of useful information on this forum and if you look around you will see there are members who live in well known tourist areas, members who live off the beaten track and members who live somewhere half way between. Also there are linked sub-forums which are region specific and information on places to visit, places to eat etc ;-))

Additionally many Ayuntamiento websites have a lot of information along the lines of what you're looking for (including in some cases links to sub-sites for example Oficina de Turismo sites) however please be aware for some towns you may need a grasp of Spanish to trawl through the information on their websites.

    Wikipidia is another good source.

If you haven't already done so, you could start by clicking on the guide to Spain section of this forum. There is much information to be found about the different areas.

To find out indepth info on all areas and regions would require looking at lots of different websites, books - even local newspapers. Spain and its regions is a rapidly changing country, full of contradicitions and inigmas. You need to try to understand the history and then follow through to present day to get a real grasp.

This forum is a good place to start

If there is an area you are particularly interested in just name it and there is bound to be someone on here with first-hand info for you; personal recommendation is always best. I'll do the Guadalhorce Valley if you want....as will several others on here.

Also consider a theme. For example if you are interested in Roman Spain, or Phoenician Spain, Moorish Spain, Jewish Spain, the Goths, the Vandals, the Visigoths, the Alans, the Lusitanians - they have all been here and left their mark then research on just that subject. You will find that they offer deeper insights into certain parts of Spain. For example the Phoenicians were big in Málaga, Cádiz, Sevilla; the Alans had areas of Gallicia and Bætica, and so on.

    You forgot British Spain!!!!!
If you are interested in that, just wander through the streets of Benidorms Levante district after midnight, or Ibiza in the summer. They have certainly made their mark.
