Am I old fashioned in thinking that we should show a little respect for the Spanish? After all, we've come to their country, either on holiday or to live, and whilst I know we are boosting their economy, we are nevertheless their 'guests'. So we should show a little respect to the locals....like not wandering around their towns and into shops, bars and restaurants without a shirt on (guys) and bikini bottoms (girls). When we're ordering drinks, a meal or buying something, it doesn't hurt to be polite and say please and thank you does it? You will usually find you get a smile in return and much better service. Let's show them that the Brits are still a nice friendly race and that we cqan have a good time without behaving badly.

LOL
Are you sure you meant "bikini bottoms (girls)" But on a serious note, I totally agree we should be respectful of the locals.... What about them being respectful of us? In some places as a Guiri you are not too welcome (or respected) ...

Hi, I am spanish and, certainly, I feel unrespected by English people who dress this way and by some things they do in bars and restaurant here in Spain. I think it is not be old fashioned to ask for respect. I think a lot of british people only knows touristic places in Spain, where it seems all is permited, I think you must to know the "other" Spain, that is also real, specially Castille and the green north (Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia, Basque Country...).

I totally agree Footsie but I would go even further. We should treat every person we meet with respect. As indeed I would expect from them.

We used to have a shop in a seassde resort on the South Coast in England, there was the same dismaying dress code, hairy armpits, bare feet...yuk. I dislike any person who does not have good manners and consideration for others regardless of race. There are rather a lot of 'em over here tho

Respect is important no matter what country a person decides to make their home in. Saying this we live inland in a 99% Spanish population village but this is what we aimed at, love it and though we'll never be fully accepted as we'll always be 'guiri's' ; gradually more people have started talking to us [spanish is improving, thankfully] We've helped pick almonds , assisted when a car went over the edge of the road at 6.10am yesterday [other brits said we should NOt HAVE helped ?????] given home grown fruit and veg to our neighbours [all spanish ] .
So, Yes ! respect needs to be given but its not an automatic right for it to bereturned but it always helps. |

Shelair I was interested on reading your post about the incident of the car that other Brits stated you shouldn't have leant a helping hand? Can't work that one out. Why would they say that?
