between power cuts, frozen pipes and branches breaking, I could have thought it was just unfortunate... but when I went to go into town today, normally a 3 km drive, I was stopped by police and told the road was closed. At this point Flossie decided she didn't like policemen and leapt from the backseat into the front. The poor cop must have had some sort of cannine phobia as he jumped about six feet backwards, which did not improve his mood. So when I asked if there was another route open into town, he said I could take a 25 km route to Alcoy and then get to Cocentaina or used the other route, a 40km route to Muro and then get to Cocentaina. When asked when the road would be open again, He just walked away.
Deciding on the shorter detour (mistake) I quickly found the planner that planned this road had a fetish for spirograph. I don't think I ever got the car into 5th gear. Finally arriving in Alcoy, to find horrendous traffic problems caused by some sort of church procession. All I'm after is a carton of cigs, a bottle of vodka, and some fresh chicken for Flossie, already my blood pressure is high enough to scare 7 colours of s%^& out of cadiar's nurse.
I've arrived in a part of Alcoy that I have only been once. Now trying to find a parking space on a street that is wide enough for 2 push bikes to pass safely. Solution : park on the pavement, rush into shop, get what's needed and dash down the road to the tabacco shop get the cigs and leave. WRONG. The procession has caused a traffic back-up and I can't get back onto the road. Initate Plan B. Plan B involves reversing back up the pavement until I can get a space in traffic to get into the traffic. It would have worked, but somebody else thought parking on the pavement was a good idea. Finally a gap in traffic that allowed me to get onto the road...... but going in the wrong direction. A U turn will sort that or find a straight long enough to get speed up for a handbrake turn (i was getting desperate but not deseperate enough to try to throw a handbrake turn in an ageing renault megane estate diesel petrolheads will know what I mean) Then get back onto the spirograph road, just in time to get ahead of a suicidal driver who , wants to drive so close he can get the full benefit of my car's exhaust.
Back to the original cause of the diversion..... it's been cleared and the road is open. But hey, this is Spain...... even a 10 minute trip to the shops can be an adventure![]()
