    Default Padron! Benefits?

I recently went on to Orihuela's padron. I did so in order to re-plate my car for which padron and residencia are a necessity. Idle thoughts: Are there any perks to being on the padron, for those who are retired (presuming anyone retires these days).

A free trolley dolly to accompany me on visits to the Mercadona wouldn't be a bad idea. Free travel, half prize beer, a special qwik-queue at municipal buildings and post offices, free television connections, reduced on-line fees ...

One thing you get in Andalucia once you are over 65 is a green card for reductions on buses, entrance to cultural, sporting and other activities etc.

If you live in Torrevieja you can have a bus pass - gives you free travel - not sure of the range probably only around Torrevieja - but every little helps.

If you are on the padron in Torrevieja, free bus passes are available for all ages.the idea is to stop people living on the surrounding urbanisations from taking their cars into the centre. It doesn't help me. I live a little outside the Torrevieja area, and can't get a bus into town, so have to take the car.

The more people on the padrón - the more funding from Central Government.
Also, the increased size of a town means more local police, local doctors, medical centres, teachers, and so on.

Lenox has it dead right. The more people on the Padron the merrier for us all. It will even decide how many taxi licences should be issued for your area. If you need to purchase a large item, such as a car, or come in contact with any official office then having a padron, copy less than 3 months old, is virtually a necessity.

Hello Aylyn, here in Andalucia we can buy house/car without being on the padron. Padron is a certificate of residency and does help your local ayuntamiento offer more services and gives you voting ability. We have yet to explore what our local village ( a big one) has as benefits for being registered.

Some town halls will do anything to get names on the padron as the benefits are mostly theirs. We have lived here for many years and never had to show anything about padron for anything.

Frequently it depends on who you are dealing with, and I mean the actual person, but on purchase of a new car and medical for driving test they required an up to date copy of same. Unlike the Uk they do like to have proof of where the driver/vehicle resides. Buying a house well until you have bought it you can't have a padron. Yes it is in the interest of the local ayuntamiento to get this but if it benefits them then indirectly it will benefit you, unless of course the usual scams are in place.

My husband took the spanish 'driving medical' recently and showed nothing that proved where he lived.

You can go on the padron whether you are living in rented or bought property. Padron is a statement of your habitual residence, it is equivilent of the census in the UK. It is illegal to be padroned in two places at the same time. To buy a car you need an address but you can buy whether padroned or not. We have done all these things and have never been asked for it ever. It is true that some officials ask for documents when they are not legally necessary. It is another way for the local authorities to encourage you on to the padron so they get the income, even if they accept ex pats who are not fully resident in Spain as there is no cross check between UK and Spain. There is a cross check for spanish nationals and there are examples where a national is registered where he rents and where he has bought and goes on/ comes off depending which place he is currently living in.

Obviously things are being done differently in Sevilla than they are in Alicante, nothing new in that, but I find it strange that there is a desire not to appear on the padron. You may not like the idea of a council benefitting from registering but it is to the general good if benefits come your way, Obtaining a SIP card also required a copy of the padron to register with your local clinic. Services round here have been improving vastly over the last 9 years and quite a lot of it is due to people registering on the padron and voters lists. Nothing focuses a politicians mind than the number of people who can hold him to account. .
