The emergence of the Internet (i.e. websites) is the biggest advance in communications since the steam or telephone system was invented. How unfortunate that it coincides with the worst educational standards in 150 years.
I checked out about one hundred commercial websites here on the Costa Blanca. Most are British owned but many are Spanish, targeting the English speaking communities. Some were expensive; impressive. Incredibly 90 per-cent were littered with cringe-making spelling and grammatical mistakes. Schoolboy howlers. How can potential customers be expected to take them seriously?
One was that of a TV production company and another an Orihuela information website. In each of their opening paragraphs I spotted several glaring mistakes. Coastal was costal, believe was beleive, etc.
I have (for a modest fee) tidied many up to journalist standards but there's a lot to go at. If I were looking for an analogy; imagine a beautiful person wearing filthy boots.
By the way, don't blame the web designer. Their job is to create appealing websites. They are not necessarily competent at giving their clients copy professional accuracy or marketing flair.
There's nothing wrong with websites per se. If they are not working it is because many actually deter clients with their slaughter of the English language.
