    Exclamation Nisperos and Plums

This year our nisperos are very late and looking worse of the wear ! some fruit is almost ready but lots are still green and have black patches on them. Some of the ripening fruit has maroon coloured indentations on them which if I remember rightly they had last year but it did not affect the inside of the fruit.

Our plums are coming one BUT are mostly all affected by white almost powdery patches. Both trees seem to be healthy enough themselves and re at opposite end of the garden. I am wondering if it is a symptom of the wet and windt months earlier this year ?

Has anybody else got the same problems ? I live 12k west of Sevilla.

    HELP please

We have harvested some of the nispero and they are not so bad at all, a lot of bad ones but plenty for our consumption

The plums are still nowhere near ready, the white powdery like patches are not so visible but a few have brown patches the white gone into the fruit maybe ? time will tell as to whether they are edible or not !

Meantime the 'new' peach tree is bearing some delicious fruit, 2nd year of being planted here.

Val, Have you tried growing cherries..They are great this time of the year..As they grow well in the UK, the wet windy winters shouldn't affect them too much.?

Knowing that you are not keen on fungicides and pesticides, my gardening book recommends a natural spray of Horse's tail.(Cola de Caballo}.It doesn't mean that you have to go round the local riding school with a pair of scissors. Apparently it's a herb prepared by mixing 100 grams of fresh stems (without roots) to 1.5 litres of water, or 25g of dried herbs with 1.5 ltr water. Its use A general spray against fungal diseases on fruit trees. Spray plants and surrounding soil. Can also be used for leaf curl. Benefits...Protects beneficial insects and worms..keeps away aphids... reduces residual concentration on the skin of fruit.etc.
My wife says that they sell it in Health food shops.

Val, My book is for the Med side of Spain. We don't grow cherries, (only eat them) Here it is mainly Oranges, lemons, almonds, nisperos, olives and grapes. I will ask my supplier on the fruit and veg stall next time I go to the market. Have you seen cherry trees in your area?

CD I am not sure, I have looked at images of cherry trees and think there may be some around here. There are up at Ronda. A Cherry festival sounds great

We have (not personally) all those fruits ( well no grapes nor olives but we do have peaches and hopefully this year figs) and nut around here also.

That would be great if you can ask

Cherries? - Yes, very definitely YES
We don't have any trees of our own but they grow lots around here and we are forever being given boxes of them by the neighbours. Starting 19th June is the village cherry festival which lasts until the 21st. If you have to buy them, they are about 5 euros for 3kg much better that £4-£5 for a kg in UK.

Cherries are a particular favourite of mine since I was born during the war and fruit was hard to come by, but we had a cherry tree in the garden!

The cherries are wonderful at the moment and grow in abundance in the Valle de Leguart and Valle d'Ebo here in the north of the Costa Blanca. It's nice to eat local fruit that's in season, not transported halfway across the world to Sainsburys!
