Since you are asking about aircon at this time of year I'm guessing it's a reverse cycle aircon that can provide heat as well as cool air. What cause them to start and stop the the temp setting on the thermosat. Try setting it a bit higher.

the thermostat will be in the aircon and will cut off when the room (with the aircon in it) reaches the set temp. If you want it to heat the hall, you might try using an electric fan to get the warmer air moving. But using the aircon and a fan is going to really make a difference to your electric bill

It does not seem to be doin that Willie, so I have switched it off and turned up the log burner instead. The hall feels warmer. I will use the radiators to heat the rooms when friends are coming. Again I wish I had paid attention to how my husband did it, I seem to be doing a lot of that these days

It is I suspect a fault with the unit Val, as we have one & it will do this on occasion as well.
I just leave the rascal for a spell and it tends to find first gear again and off it goes

If your unit is at the usual height (2 metres), it will self monitor the temp at that height on the wall. As hot air rises it will need to be set on the remote at about 27 degrees to maintain 22 at sitting level within the room. (Ours does anyway).
We also have a butane mobile heater in the hall which keeps it nicely aired on just the lowest setting, which is very economical. It also means that we have a source of quick heat on hand for use anywhere in the house if needed. If you haven't got one they are a good investment.

I have a first line aircon unit which I use for heating and cooling. You need to set the thermostat really high to get it heating-30degs-otherwise it will just cut out.I have to unplug mine often to get it to resort it's brains-and plug in again after a few minutes. The icons are not very easy-needs to show the sun for heating-but that looks like the snowflake for cooling! and my instructions are in Italian-incomprehensible.It did need regassing this summer after about 5 years-must have had a leak.I only put it on for about 10 minutes when I go to bed just to warm the room up--pure luxury !

The unit is above a door, the direction of flow is high to go along the hall. It is set to fan and heat with temp at 25. I will unplug and start it again tomorrow changing the temp to 27 and see what happens. If not then I will wait till somebody comes to visit that can look at it. Thank you all for your input.
