I will be moving to Barcelona soon. My work place will be near Martorell. Would it be wise to live near Martorell or near Barcelona? How difficult is it to survive without speaking any spanish at all? |

Hi yokozuna,
Welcome to the Absolute Spain Forum, on the map below you can see the distance from Martorell to Barcelona. I highly recommend you live in Martorell unless you like to commutte via train/car..... martorell to barcelona - Google Maps Quote:
Will you be working for a local company? Or a multinational?

Thanks!
I ll be working for a multinational company. How different are Catalan and Spanish languages? Google maps shows it takes approx. 30 min from Barcelona to Martorell...seems like a commutable distance. Can I find gym/health club and other facilities easily in Martorell? |

Erm... Pretty different I would say.
Quote:
Add on travel time from your home to the station (bus, train, metro) plus from arrival to your place of work... It could take around 60 minutes total. Times two, would be 2 hours commutting everyday... That's 10 hours per week and 40 hours per month. Quote:

Hi Yokozuna
I also live in Barcelona, and agree with Greg. I would say that the commuting times might be even longer, depending on what part of Barcelona you were living in. As far as Catalan and Spanish are concerned, they are pretty different when spoken. When you see them written, you can see many more similarities and recognise more words, because they are sister languages, along with French, Italian, etc. Hope this helps. Good luck. Valerie |

Hello, i live in Martorell. Martorell I think is a pretty town with few inhabitants. It has many shops and also has direct rail train to Barcelona. In 20 minutes you are in Barcelona city with RENFE. About Martorell is there an area with many industries, especially automotive.
Hope you helps. |
