Rent first - then buy! That way you can look around an area and get the feel of it first. Areas differ greatly and it depends on whether you want the hustle and bustle of life on the coast or the slower, more relaxed lifestyle inland, up in a valley like us.

....and don't buy 'off-plan'. There are plenty of completed and 2nd hand properties already on the market, which you can view just like you would at home and take your time deciding if you like them. We viewed nearly 30 villas and drew up a short list before finally deciding. Many vendors are desperate to sell and so drive a hard bargain. Get yourself an independant agent AND lawyer - I can recommend Search and Survey in Calpe - and make sure all the relevant searches have been done. There are some dodgy properties out there - give them a wide berth and go for something 100% legal.

Good luck and enjoy a new life in Spain!
